Prison Torture Still Happening - UN

According to a UN inspector, his look into prisons found torture still happening, a government security unit blocking his attempts to uncover more information, and widespread abuses.

If you think I'm talking about Iraq or Afghanistan or Gitmo, though, you are wrong, it's actually happening in China.

"The practice of torture though on decline particularly in urban areas remains widespread in China," the United Nations said in a statement released at the end of the trip by Manfred Nowak, the body's special investigator on torture.

It will be intersting to see if this report gets more than the three paragraphs the AP released on it in any major newspapers.

Update: The story has disappeared from the Post as of this afternoon. The NY Times still has it as the #2 story under international, and provided this link to the report, which is interesting reading. Especially the part about a 10 year wait for China to allow the inspection!

Why should the MSM comment on it at all? If it can't be blamed on Bush and conservative Americans it isn't important. Surely you have figured this out by now. :-D

They aren't giving it a lot of attention, that's for sure. My update has a note about it disappearing from the Washington Post, and being buried in NY Times.

Do you suppose the torture they're referring to is making them wear women's panties, or having a woman disrobe in front of them? Perhaps they're making them watch as a book is accidently hit with water that was deflected off a wall. Are they made to do silly college fraternity stunts?

Based on other complaints from the UN and the "international community", I wonder if we should really be worried about the forms of torture being used in China. Something about crying wolf.

No, actually they are talking about people being shackled 24/7 in china, for years while waiting to die. Beatings, broken bones, etc. Not stinky hoods and girly undies.
