Comeback Trail?
The guy that has become their chosen one, in the Moose's words "...would be a disaster for the donkey. But, there is an unmistakable pull in the party toward the port side. Filibusters are being hatched in Davos, and the inmates have taken over the asylum."
After I read it, though, it gave me a pause to think about the inmates and the asylum. Maybe it wouldn't be bad for the far left crowd to actually be the one's to cause the Dem's to gain some seats in the House and Senate in 2006. Not take control of either, just gain enough seats to look respectable.
I say this, because I think it would embolden them in 2008. It might even get them to think that they could win the White House on a strongly progressive platform. History has shown that to be a losing path, not just recently, but since 1968 when Damaged Goods Dick Nixon was elected.
Jimmy Carter wasn't elected in 1976 because we wanted to move to the left, he was elected because of the damage Nixon had done to the GOP. Clinton wasn't elected in 1992 or 1996 because we wanted to move left, he was generally running on centrist platforms, and against a GOP split by Perot being on the ticket.
A few hard left progressive pick ups in 2006 would embolden the moonbat end of the Democrats to believe that is a winning ticket nationally. They would probably force the party to nominate someone who has little chance in a national election.
Just about any moderate republican would wax a Kerry, Gore, or farther left candidate from the Democrats, and as the Moose said, it would be a disaster for the Donkey.

I agree on the "inmates and the asylum" sentiment but I disagree on the identity of "The One". It was lost in the crash of my blog but I wrote a long piece on my personal conspiracy theory regarding MoveOn.or, George Soros and, are you ready for it? Howard Dean.
Talk about the asylum: It would not surprise me in the least if the Democratic Party is the group that is split by a third party candidate in 2008. Moderates will still go after Hillary, she's considered a sure thing and she has the cash. But I think Soros will back Dean because he'll make a better puppet than Hillary or Gore. Remember the MoveOn.org people worship Dean and where MoveOn goes the KosKids follow. They'll think that between Soros' money and their "grassroots" they'll have a chance. Every whack job socialist/anarchist/anti-imperialist group will unite to force Howard Dean on moderate America.
You and I know that it's a very flawed plan but we're sane. I don't think anyone in the far left has the luxury of making that claim.
Bob...do you play chess? ;-)
Patty ~ I do know that there many, many sane people still in the Democratic Party. That doesn't change the fact that extreme left are the ones with the loudest voices right now. The sad thing is that now Hillary is being argued against by some in your party for being too moderate.
That is a very scary thought.
Lone Pony, nope, I'm lousy at chess. I believe in full frontal assaults, and those don't work as well in that game.
Patty, I know what you mean about Reagan Democrats. They are the group the party needs to be trying to win back, but instead they keep letting folks from the far end drive more of them out.
Janette, as long as it isn't Nader again, that is possible. I'm not sure Dean or Kerry would jump ship from the party to run as an independent, but it would be interesting to see.
Oh yeah, patty, I've been whacked by that meme already
