DeLay Quits

Tom DeLay, the former Majority Leader in the House has decided to pull out of the his re-election race, and resign from the House of Representatives.

While I think his prosecution is as politically motivated as it is ethically, this is a good decision on his part. It removes another Democratic talking point for the mid-term elections. While they'll be able to refer to him in the past tense, it's harder to villify someone who isn't in the race, or the House.

I have mixed feelings about this. I think Delay is awesome and being unfairly demonized. Yet I commend him for not dragging the GOP through the mud. I just think its sad that the democrats seem to have used dirty politics in this arena and won.

Good call about this being something the Dems have to remove from their talking points. They're not going to have much to talk about. Of course, their whining has become quite rehearsed.

Great blog. :)

Maybe the Democrats didn't use dirty politics. Maybe Delay knew an indictment was coming and tried to make a preemptive strike. Amputate the gangrenous limb to save the dying patient, so to speak.

It also shows that he puts the welfare of the country ahead of his own career.

DeLay will be back when all is done. There will be other elections and other opportunities to serve. For now it is a good move to separate and allow your position to be represented by another who will have like minded pursuits.

Attesa, thanks for coming to visit. Hope to see you back. You are right about the whining. I think they get together in the ante room at 3 every day for practice. Pelosi leads the choir :)

Matthew, he's already been indicted in Texas for money laundering, which is the reason he's leaving.

LMC, many have used dirty politics over the years, both GOP and Dem's. I think in the end when he's not indicted for any Abramoff stuff, and beats the Ronnie Earl charges he'll come back and make some Dem's look really silly.

As for the Abramoff stuff, a couple of folks close to that issue have been claiming for weeks that DeLay's name isn't going to come up in conjuction with Jack.
