Opinion Journal Nails It
Here's a preview:
We recount all this because, even amid GM's decline and France's economic turmoil, most of America's liberal elites refuse to draw the right lesson. They cling to the belief that if only the Democrats can retake Congress, or the union movement can once again organize more of the American labor force, the old economy of union-backed job security and egalité will return. Or, worse, they propose seceding from global competition via protectionism. It is all a delusion. Down that road lies France--a nice place to vacation, but you wouldn't
want to work there.

A lot of people feel that the GM employees are like spoiled children, but the ending of their being spoiled is going to have nasty repercussions throughout the State of Michigan. A lot of them feel that we just have to get rid of NAFTA and China, but that would result in automation instead. What would save their jobs is concessions (they could lose a quarter of their pay and still be one of the best paying unskilled jobs around.) They would rather destroy themselves and take the whole world down with them, like the spoiled children they are.
I think some of them believe that if GM collapses the state will take it over and be the first step to Socialism. Most of the rank and file do not believe this but I wonder if that is at the back of the minds of some Union leaders.
I actually think the union would like to hold out long enough to see if the Dem's retake congress. If they do I think the union probably believes the feds will bail GM out, and congress won't let them get whacked to hard in the process.
The state is probably an option, but not as strong an option.
