Angry Atheists

Evidently Anthony Kennedy has really ticked off the American Atheist movement with his stay of a judges order to remove the Mt. Soledad cross in San Diego.

The stay wasn't "merit based", meaning that Kennedy didn't say that the order to remove was likely to be overturned on appeal. Instead he said that the damage done by the removal would likely be irrepairable if the order were overturned, and therefore the "status quo" would do for a while longer. The standard for fence sitter Kennedy, who can't decide where he stands on much of anything.

Even though the court refused to hear this case 3 years ago, with two new members Kennedy also decided that it was likely that four justices would agree to a future appeal of the latest ruling, and ordered the cross to remain where it is.

This must really tick of Phil Paulsen, who filed the suit to remove the cross, since the other prominent San Diego cross, located at Mt. Helix is also still there, despite Phil's best legal efforts.

Here's an idea for Mr. Paulsen, and other other atheists who are so offended by privately funded war memorials which have crosses on them (which is what the Soledad Cross is). Buy a mountain top, and on the top of it afix a huge atheist symbol..... Oh wait, they don't have one.
I guess a nice open space on a mount top would be nice.

For starters we need to start treating Atheistic organizations as religious organizations since the existance/non-existance of God is considered beyond the sphere of science by most scientists. Once their beliefs are treated as the religious beliefs they are we can start reasonably dealing with Atheistic Fundamentalists like this guy and Newdow and others. We may not, constitutionally and legally speaking, a Christian nation but we are even less an Atheistic nation. The non-Christians need to accept the fact that the vast majority of people in this country are Christians and that is not likely to change anytime soon.

Actually Paula, if a jewish, or islamic group wanted to build a war memorial with their religious symbol on it I'd be just as ticked if a goofball tried to get it torn down.

Remember, neither the Mt. Helix or Soledad crosses were built by the government, or in the case of Mt. Soledad, even maintained by it. The park at Helix was, due to a perpetual trust giving the formerly private land to be used by the residents of San Diego County.

Right. As I said, you can't illegalize it. It would just be nice to be more inclusive. No offense, but I don't think a member of the majority can really understand. It isn't a matter of, well, you guys can put up your own thing somewhere else. Yes, the teacher gives the Jewish kid a pack of Star of David stickers while the other 39 kids are making trees. You think that's good enough, right?

Actually Paula, I think you are looking at a 1954 gesture; the building of the momument to Korean War Vets; through 2006 eyes.

We all want to see things today through our own little groups hypenated eyes. Maybe Italian-American Vets should be pissed that it's not the traditional Italian Cross, or Greeks that it wasn't a Greek Orthadox style cross.

The group that built it did it with the words "to all of those who gave their lives".

Phil Paulsen, the creator of the controversy, would be just as pissed if it was a star of David or an Islamic Cresent. Read the guys writings over the last two decades and you see a guy who isn't angry about a cross, but anything religious, including your own worship.

You know FJ, a lot of folks have said that prayer helps with spontaneous outbursts of anger. Maybe you should give it a try.
