Abramoff Could Burn Many

Before Nancy begins her next diatribe on the culture of corruption in the GOP in conjunction with Jack Abramoff's plea deal today, she might want to see who else he's going to squeal on.

While you'd never know it from the Washington Post's story on the topic today, or Chris Cillizza's Fix, there are Democrats who received money from Abramoff, including Harry Reid the Senate Minority leader. Of course Harry, like Rep. Ney of Ohio claims he's innocent of wrong doing, but evidently the media only gives Reid the benefit of the doubt at this point.

Unless they are complete morons, guys with pockets as deep as Jack's very seldom play one side of the political field. The party you court one year could be out of power the next, and then you have much less influence.

One of the prosecutors interviewed this evening on the DC's ABC 7 news made the point that this could become the biggest politcal scandal ever, if that is the case, my guess is neither party is coming out clean. In a case like this one, being less dirty doesn't do your party a bit of good come election time, because the other side will kill you by association too.

So while it may be the biggest political scandal ever, it may hurt fewer politicians than many think, only because neither side can afford to start a war with Abramoff at the center of it.

With the left, the guilt of the Republicans and innocence of the Democrats is a given. They are still thinking they control the flow of information like they did 25 years ago and think they can still get away with it.

It will be interesting to see how it all pans out. I heard Rush talking about Reid today and it sounds like if others are going down he will also. And to be honest if there are Republicans that are involved in wrongdoing in this they shouldn't be re-elected.

From the December 14th Washington Post:

The senior Democrat on the Senate committee investigating former lobbyist Jack Abramoff announced this week that he will return $67,000 in donations from Indian tribes represented by the indicted Republican.

From the June 3rd Washington Post:

Among the biggest beneficiaries were Capitol Hill's most powerful Democrats, including Thomas A. Daschle (S.D.) and Harry M. Reid (Nev.), the top two Senate Democrats at the time, Richard A. Gephardt (Mo.), then-leader of the House Democrats, and the two lawmakers in charge of raising funds for their Democratic colleagues in both chambers, according to a Washington Post study. Reid succeeded Daschle as Democratic leader after Daschle lost his Senate seat last November.

From the December 19th Billings Gazette:

Montana Sen. Max Baucus, ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, is donating $18,892 he once received from Abramoff's clients and associates to seven tribal colleges in his state. The committee is part of a wide-ranging congressional investigation of Abramoff's activities.

From SF Gate on December 19th:

"..Democrat on the list, who took in $42,500, is Rep. Patrick Kennedy of Rhode Island, who sits on the House Appropriations Committee.."

Any other bubbles you'd like me to burst Repack?

Google is so cool, they could actually use it to find out if they are full of crap before they post, but refuse to.

I still love the writing CP and I am checking in on behalf of the one guy in the middle of Arizona who actually reads your posts. I don't 100% agree but then who does? How you can filter so much and not loose a grip I'll never know.

You need a smoker, some tools, and home brew. Hey, brew only takes a few hours a month so you can spend other quality time smoking meat or working in the garage. Ah, I'm looney tonight.

Mark, it's easy, I occasionally go off the deep end, read Kos, and remember immediately why I am what I am :)

Patrickfir- You are correct. If they find someone was being bought, they should be hammered. Like Trafficant, the Abscam Folks, and Dirty Dan Rostenkowski. I don't care what party they are with, hammer them.

Monte, in a few languages. I can also say Barrett Report, which is why it won't happen. Do some research on it, you'll know what I mean.

Don't you people see? Thre Christian Conservative GOP, is above the law....just read this...

"The time has come that the American people know exactly what their Representatives are doing here in Washington. Are they feeding at the public trough, taking lobbyist-paid vacations, getting wined and dined by special interest groups?"
-Rep. Tom DeLay (R) Tx.

Soccer Mom's and Desperate Housewives will beleive anything.

Monte, you have DeLay confused with Robert Byrd, congress's current Klansman

BTW, did you know that since the redistricting to help the "white GOP" Texas now has 3 more minority representatives in the US House?

Probably not, since the NY Times hasn't told you. Again, you should try google, it's a hoot.
